The immersive exhibition Behind the Wall, which uses augmented reality to tell the story of Uherské Hradiště prison, has been awarded the prestigious Golden Semicolon in the Mobile Applications and Innovation category.
After nearly three years of development, this project — created by the non-profits Historia Futurae and Memoria — brings to life the dark history of the prison, mainly focusing on the post-1948 communist era, marked by the torture and execution of innocent individuals.
Historia Futurae was founded by some members of our team and the people behind our sister company, VRCØT. The app’s UX, design, multimedia, and storytelling were crafted by Little Greta, further enhancing the exhibition’s immersive experience. The exhibition leverages augmented reality through a mobile app to blend the physical environment with digital elements seamlessly.
Visitors are guided through six stations outside the prison wall by the hologram of Hradiště native actress Eva Podzimková. Key features include interactive interrogations and a 3D reconstruction of a solitary confinement cell.
The app is designed to make history accessible and engaging, especially for younger generations, acting as a virtual museum until a physical one is built by 2028. The project was made possible through donations and public funding, with a successful crowdfunding campaign significantly contributing to its development.
