Challenge

The Regional Gallery of Fine Arts in Zlín is preparing to launch a long-term exhibition titled “Plus Mínus Zlín,” set to open in autumn 2024. To enhance the visitor experience and provide an alternative way of exploring the exhibition, the gallery decided to develop a mobile application featuring augmented reality (AR).

The goal was to create an immersive, user-friendly app that caters to a diverse audience, from younger users to older gallery visitors, while also aligning with the exhibition’s artistic concept.

Concept

Little Greta was tasked with executing this vision, working on two primary fronts: developing the mobile application and crafting 11 immersive points to enhance the exhibition experience. The exhibition, which is divided into two main themes—fine arts and architecture and design—required a thoughtful approach to ensure both thematic areas were engaging and accessible to all visitors.

On the first front, we focused on creating a seamless user experience within the app. The app was designed to guide visitors through the exhibition without relying on a linear narrative. Visitors could explore each immersive point independently, offering flexibility and personalization in how they experienced the exhibition. The user journey begins with a scanning screen that introduces each point, leading into the AR experience. For those seeking deeper engagement, a “Learn More” function provides additional context and detailed information, accessible both before and after the AR interaction. Visually, it reflects the physical exhibition’s aesthetic crafted by Lukáš Kijonka, Czechoslovak posters, and mid-century design.

The second front involved the production of 11 immersive points that brought the exhibition themes to life through various interactive elements. These points included soundscapes of the city and nature, two 3D holograms viewable through the camera lens, selfie filters, and two animations developed in collaboration with Pirogy Studios. We also showcased the 6.15 architectural principle in 3D, created a nearly 5-minute-long videocollage about product design, developed a VR experience of one of the paintings on display, and produced an animated cubist self-portrait. These immersive points were carefully crafted to complement the exhibition’s themes, providing visitors with a rich and varied experience.

While the AR components were specified by the gallery, our team ensured that these innovative elements were seamlessly integrated with more traditional, analog aspects of the exhibition. This balanced approach made the complex topics of fine arts, architecture, and design more accessible and engaging for a diverse audience, from younger visitors to older patrons. By combining advanced AR technology with thoughtful content and design, we created an experience that both informs and captivates.

Result

The final mobile application successfully met the gallery’s specifications, offering an engaging and educational experience that bridges digital and physical spaces. The non-linear exploration allows visitors to interact deeply with the exhibition’s themes of fine arts, architecture, and design while crafting a balanced and captivating journey with the use of innovative technology and media forms. As the exhibition opens, we anticipate initial responses and early user testing to confirm that “Plus Mínus Zlín” sets a new standard for how art and design are experienced in galleries.
